Patricia Garfield, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized authority on dreams. She is the author of 10 published books covering a broad range of dream topics. These topics include: nightmares, children’s dreams, healing through dreams and dream-related art. Her best-known work is “Creative Dreaming.” Originally published in 1974 it was revised and reprinted again in 1995.

International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD)

Garfield is one of the six co-founders of The International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD), originally called the Association for the Study of Dreams (ASD). The IASD is a non-profit, international, multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the “pure and applied investigation of dreams and dreaming.” Garfield’s five ASD co-founders are: Strephon Kaplan Williams, Jeremy Taylor, Gayle Delaney, John Van Damm, and Stephen LaBerge. Garfield was the President of the ASD from 1998 to 1999.

Honors: academic, professional

Dr. Garfield’s Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (1968) is from Temple University, Philadelphia.

Her Master's (1964) and Bachelor's degrees (1963) in Psychology are also from Temple.

She graduated summa cum laude, with Distinction in Psychology; received the Psychology Prize; College Alumni First Prize; a National Science Foundation grant, and other honors.

CREATIVE DREAMING was a Psychology Today book club alternate selection.

THE DREAM BOOK is the non-fiction winner of the 2002 Parents' Guide Media Award and was nominated for the Young Hoosier's Book Award 2004-2005.

Dr. Garfield received an Outstanding Contribution award from her professional organization (IASD July 1999); she served as President (1998–99) and as Co-Founder (1984) of IASD.

Her articles have appeared in professional journals; she’s also contributed chapters to books edited by others.

Teaching, lecturing

Dr. Garfield taught psychology for several years at Temple University; at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (assistant professor, 1971); at California State College, Sonoma (1973) and for the University of California Extension at assorted campuses including Berkeley, San Diego, Irvine, and Santa Cruz.

At Dominican University of California in San Rafael, Dr. Garfield taught “Lifelong Dreaming” (Spring 2006 and Fall 2007) and “Dreams and Film” (Spring 2009) for seniors in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI).

Dr. Garfield has given invited lectures throughout the U.S.A; at international and regional dream conferences (including London, Amsterdam, Chicago, Montreal, Leiden, Copenhagen, Hawaii, Berkeley, St. Paul, Asheville, etc.).

She has delivered invited addresses in Jaipur, India; Tokyo, Japan; Norwich, England and various other venues, including being a keynote speaker for the Young Presidents Organization annual meeting held at The Reagan Library in California (Mar 20, 2008); and she has spoken in Washington, D.C. at the Smithsonian Institution (1996).
