Opening ceremony of the tower

In 1940’s, there were functioned parachute towers in cities of the USSR, which were constructed in parks and in other mass walking places of people. Then, the parachute tower of 75 metres height, which was placed in Baku Boulevard, was constructed “Bakinskiy rabochiy” (Baku worker) machinery plant on the initiative of Baku City Council. Specialists of design office became constructors of the tower. At that time, it was possible to build such a complex metal construction everywhere, but Baku was distinguished for its strong technological basis in production of metal constructions.

Opening ceremony of the tower was held on April 28, 1936, on the day of 16th anniversary of establishment of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic.

Technical parameters

Everybody who desired and loved extreme could use the parachute tower. Jumps from parachute for military preparation of youth were also held there. There were 4 marks on the tower, at a height of 10, 20, 25 and 60 metres. The lowest mark was the most secured one, but jumping from the highest one was not allowed to everybody.

Jumps from the tower were utmost secured, because a parachute had constant cupola which didn’t change and fold. Risk of nondisclosure of the parachute was absent. The parachute was attached to metal circle and looked like a shade on which were hanged shrouds with belts.

Everybody could jump and there wasn’t need for a special outfit. Seat belts embraced hips and large bunch of belts came out of it. A rope was located in centre of shade which went through the winch system and weights hanged throughout its height. If a fat man jumped, the parachute worked as a brake, because the cupola took the part of weight’s load on it.

Change of the purpose

The tower was used for a direct purpose for a long time. But after a tragic event, which happened in 1960s in the result of which died a person, the parachute tower changed its profile and became an electronic board flaring with neon lamps, which shows time, date, temperature and strength of the wind.
