The Paper Mate PhD Multi is a pen/pencil/stylus combination. The PhD series of pens and pencils have been specifically designed for durability and comfort, notably with a unique ergonomic, cushioned triangular grip that is endorsed by the American Physical Therapy Association. The PhD series of pens also distinguishes itself from most other Paper mate products by having a sturdier, higher-quality design.

Mechanics and Design
The modes of the pen (black ink), pencil (0.5mm lead), stylus for a touchscreen device (orange blunt plastic tip), and retracting the pen are engaged by turning the barrel. A button at the top releases the lead when pressed, and the button's cap can be removed to reveal an eraser. The PhD is also available with a red ink cartridge in place of the PDA stylus.
Replacement and Maintenance
Since Paper Mate has no signification on replacement parts and model numbers, there have been owners who have done modifications with other pen ink cartridges. These owners would take other Paper Mate ballpoint stick pens and trim their cartridges with the original cartridges. In addition, you can use Paper Mate's Inkjoy 100 RT substitute refills with the same process of trimming.
