Panj Peer (or Panj Pir), the Five Great Saints, mentioned in South Asian (Punjabi) literature are as follows:

  • Data Ganj Baksh(Al-Hajveri, of Lahore, Punjab)
  • Sheikh Baba Farid Shakarganj (Pakpattan, Punjab)
  • Baha'ud din Zakariya (Multan, Punjab)
  • Lal Shahbaz Qalandar (Sehwan, Sindh)
  • Sayyad Jalaluddin Bukhari 'Laal Shah' also known as Makhdoom Jahaaniyaan (Ucch, Punjab).
  • These are mentioned in the great love-epic of the Sufi poet Sayyid Waris Shah "Heer Ranjha", which opens with an invocation to these holy sages.
