Personal life
Chithra is the third of four children of Unnikrishan & Vasantha Kumari, both agricultural labourers from Kerala. She is an undergraduate student. She did her schooling in Mundur Higher Secondary School in Palakkad. She has been awarded Tata Nano cars by the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and the Government of Kerala for her remarkable achievements in the school meets.
A controversy emerged immediately after Athletic Federation of India has rejected her entry for Word Athletic Meet 2017 (London). Kerala High Court has directed the federations for her inclusion, however it was rejected due to cutoff time. Chitra received overwhelming support from all sections of public for her fight against Athletic Federation. As it turned out, 40 out of 44 athletes who participated in the heats of the 1500m event at the World Championship finished with times at least three seconds better than Chitra's personal best time of 4:17.92.
