PROjEN Ltd is a multi-disciplined project management and engineering consultancy, who commenced trading in 1978, in Northwich, with the majority of the original clients operating in the chemical sector. Since its formation the company has been the subject of two management buy-outs, the first being in 1995 and the latest in 2009. The most recent MBO was backed by the Co-operative Bank and corporate finance advice was provided by Clearwater.

As a flexible, management owned SME, PROjEN have realigned their products, services, and market sector focus to ensure that steady and sustainable growth is achieved for the business. PROjEN now serve a wide range of industries including Pharmaceutical & Healthcare, Manufacturing, Oil & Gas, and Bioenergy (Energy from Waste & Renewables). The core business involves all elements of the project lifecycle from project inception (including feasibility studies, capital justifications, front-end engineering and detailed design), right through to full turnkey project completion.

In 2009 the Company relocated to larger premises in Preston Brook which were officially opened by local MP Mike Hall in November 2009.

Major clients and notable projects

PROjEN's major clients include GlaxoSmithKline, AkzoNobel, Cabot Corporation, McCain Foods, Smith & Nephew, Shanks Group and Sanofi as well as a number of other blue chip clients and many smaller operations.

Recently PROjEN has been involved in the design and build of the new £100 million paint factory in the North East of England. PROjEN have also successfully completed of a number of production capacity increases, including a major process infrastructure modifications for Cabot Carbon and Johnson Matthey. PROjEN have continued to increase their penetration in the BioEnergy market with the design and build of three new Anaerobic Digestion plants; the Bio Energy sector now accounts for over 10% of the business.

Market sectors

PROjEN originally specialised in providing project management services to the Chemical sector, but now employs a diverse range of adaptable skills across variation of markets sectors.

In the Manufacturing sector; PROjEN have secured repeat business with clients such as British Sugar, Akzo Nobel and Diageo. PROjEN also maintain an enduring presence in the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical industry; where they have completed projects including, but not limited to; an award winning R22 refrigerant replacement project, pilot plant modifications and relocation of Pharmaceutical facilities, with client relations stretching back as far as 17 years with leading blue chips companies such as Sanofi, GlaxoSmithKline and Smith & Nephew.

PROjEN also has many years' experience dealing in the Oil & Gas market; predominantly in the downstream sector in areas such as Storage & Blending, Biofuel production and ensuring compliance with Functional Safety. In 2008 PROjEN built a new Bio diesel facility in Immingham for Greenergy; following the success of this project PROjEN were selected to refurbish two fuel storage facilities. These sites were the first to be compliant with the post Buncefield fire disaster recommendations. PROjEN were able to demonstrate through independent tests the integrity of the design used at these new terminals in the control of potential fire.

In 2011 PROjEN launched its new Bioenergy division which specialises in the planning, permitting, design and construction of facilities for the production of biogas by anaerobic digestion. Three anaerobic digestion plants have now been successfully completed, with several more in the pipeline for 2014/15. As part of this new venture the company joined the Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association (ADBA) a not for profit organisation launched in 2009 to champion the promotion of AD and remove the barriers to growth. PROjEN employs several industry experts such as Dr Les Gornall who has been asked to present at various conferences.

Awards and accreditations

In November 2013, PROjEN was awarded the prestigious IChemE Bio-Processing Award for an innovative Anaerobic Digestion process, that utilises a two-phase digestion process. This included a first stage hydrolysis phase that has ten times the efficiency of conventional continuous stirred tank reactors and allows the system to handle three times the amount of ammonia that would normally kill most digester bacteria. The IChemE awards have been recognising and rewarding chemical engineering innovation and excellence for the last 20 years, and have become "widely recognised as the most prestigious Chemical Engineering awards in the world."

PROjEN were awarded their 3rd (RoSPA) President Award for 12 consecutive Gold Awards from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). These awards recognises a company's performance and sustained achievement towards Health & Safety; focusing on prevention rather than cure.

The European Construction Institute's (ECI) have recognised PROjEN's achievements with a series of ACTIVE awards. This includes 'Contractor of the Year' in 2003 and'Project of the Year' in 2004, 2006 and in 2008 received the European Construction Institute (ECI) Project of the Year for the. More recently PROjEN were awarded the 2013 a fumed silica expansion project for Cabot Corporation, at their site in Barry, South Wales which increased production capacity by 25%.

In addition to project awards, the Company itself has also been recognised at local level with a number of business awards including the Vale Royal Business of the Year Award and both the Business of the Year and Positive Environmental Impact Awards at the Halton Business Awards 2013.

PROjEN is also ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 accredited.

Alliances and associations

PROjEN has teamed up with a number of partners in partnering arrangements such as recycling experts Axion, tank manufacturer Motherwell Bridge and civil and structural engineering company Clancy Consulting – with whom the company has a relationship stretching back over 10 years.
