Bishopsgarth School was a community school operated by the local education authority. In November 2016 the school converted to academy status, joining Outwood Grange Academies Trust, and changed its name to Outwood Academy Bishopsgarth.

Pastoral support

Students are members of mixed-age tutor groups known as a Vertical Mentor Groups (VMG) that meet on a daily basis. Each mentoring group has students from every year group, 7 through 11, which leads to the groups evolving over time, as older students leave and are replaced by younger students entering the school.

VMGs are each named after a country, and split into houses named after the continents Africa, Asia, Americas, Australasia and Europe.
