Mission

The organization hosts educational programs to promote awareness and appreciation of New York's architecture, design and cultural heritage. OHNY gives the public access to direct experiences and dialogue with architects, designers, planners and scholars. This interaction gives the public an opportunity to discover new work, restoration of city landmarks, construction of infrastructure, engineering works and neighborhood planning efforts.

History

  • The first-ever OHNY Weekend took place on October 11 and 12, 2003.
  • The 7th Annual OHNY Weekend was held on October 10 and 11 in 2009. It had 185,000 visitors to 192 sites. OHNY offered 130 free of charge tours, workshops and onsite talks. 125 art, civic, educational and cultural organizations and 70 architecture and design firms participated. They opened their studios and project spaces to the public for interactive discussions. Media highlights included The Architects newspaper, Metropolis, MSNBC New York Living, New York Magazine, The New York Daily News The New York Post, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Time Out New York, Vanity Fair, NY1 TV WNBC-TV, WABC-TV and WFUV.
  • The 8th Annual Weekend was held on October 9 and 10, 2010.
  • The 9th was October 15 and 16, 2011 with a $5 charge for those sites that require reservations.
  • The 10th was Oct 6 and 7, 2012, without charge.
  • The 11th was Oct 12 and 13, 2013.
  • The 12th was Oct 11 and 12, 2014.
  • The 13th was Oct 17 and 18, 2015. It included a photo contest in partnership with Wikipedia. Three prizes were awarded.
  • The 14th was Oct 15 and 16, 2016. It included another photo contest with Wikipedia.
