Open to Export is a community-driven service for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) looking for support to grow internationally by exporting from the UK. The service is delivered by hibu in partnership with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI). Open to Export comprises a website which allows UK-based companies to work together and share information, advice and support about export market opportunities and means of entry. The information, answers, advice and articles on Open to Export are all composed by the site’s users, community and key contributors.

History

The site launched in beta in May 2012, during this time Open to Export limited the business sectors to technology, and the overseas markets to the US and India. Since then, the site has broadened the range of advice available: "The new service also offers market-based information on issues including legislation, company registration, finance, market research, product development and transport and logistics"

The site officially launched in October 2012. At the time of launch Lord Green, Minister of State for Trade and Investment, said: "Supporting more small and medium-sized enterprises to export is a key part of the government’s plan for growth," and went on to say "Half of the UK's exports, by value, already come from SMEs. Open to Export will provide practical assistance, advice and support to other businesses looking to make that crucial first step to sell into foreign markets."

Local councils across the UK have also started backing the project, with Manchester and Cambridgeshire councils featuring information on their websites.
