The UK Open Source Awards was first run in 2007 in Glasgow as the Scottish Open Source Awards.

History
The Scottish Open Source Award event was delivered as a subset of the Scottish Software Awards.
Initially organised by SalesAgility, the awards, as the name implied, were aimed solely at Scottish companies and organisations engaged in or contributing to Open Source projects. The sponsors for the first awards were Sun Microsystems and the keynote speech was given by Simon Phipps (programmer).
2007
2008
In 2008, the awards were again held in Glasgow under the auspices of the Scottish Software Awards. The keynote speech was given by Dan Shearer, a member of the Samba project.
2009
In 2009, the Scottish Software Awards decided to discontinue their event and a decision was made to run The Scottish Open Source Awards as a solo venture. It was also decided to drop the word "Scottish" from the title and to aim to be an inclusive event for all UK based Open Source practitioners.
The 2009 Event was held in the Informatics Building of the University of Edinburgh in November 2009.

2010-2013
Due to pressures of work, the organisers were unable to run the Awards in these years.
2014
The Awards returned to where is now regarded as their spiritual home, the Informatics Building of the University of Edinburgh. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Systems Integrator CGI, three categories of Awards were created:
1. Student Awards (£500 prize)
2. Person/Project
3. Company/Organisation
The Awards were organised by SalesAgility, an open source Customer Relationship Management (CRM) consultancy, the authors of the SuiteCRM open source CRM application.
The Awards Judges were Amanda Brooks, Director of the Origin, a London-based IP law practice, Greg Soper, CEO of SalesAgility and Niall McCarthy, an open source advocate and CEO of the non-profit Emerge-Open.
The winners were:
1. Student - Riz Moola
2. Person/Project - Allan Day of the Gnome Project
3. Company - Alfresco.
