The Onondaga County Savings Bank was chartered in 1855 in Syracuse, New York. It was a franchise ahead of its time and had four separate branches by the late 19th century. The Onondaga County Savings Bank Building was constructed in 1896 adjacent to the Erie Canal in Clinton Square.

In 1968, the bank shortened its name to Onondaga Savings Bank and in 1987 it changed again to OnBank.

History

When Onondaga County Savings Bank was first founded in 1855, it was located in the Gridley Building. After the bank outgrew the space, the Syracuse House, an early hotel, was torn down in 1896 for construction of a new building which was completed in 1897.

The Onondaga County Savings Bank Building is located at 113 South Salina Street and is a prominent historic building on Clinton Square and Hanover Square in Syracuse, New York. It is adjacent to where the Erie Canal formerly ran.

It is a contributing building in the Hanover Square Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1998, OnBank was acquired by M&T Bank which began as Manufacturers & Trader's Trust in 1856, only four years before this building was constructed.
