Omsk Law Academy (OmLA) is a Russian private higher education institution located in Omsk, Western Siberia. It was established as Omsk Law Institute on 24 February 1998 by the Fund for Social and Legal Protection of Graduates of the Omsk Higher Militia School, renamed in 2004 to the Fund for Assistance to Legal Education and Science. It was renamed in 2012 to Omsk Law Academy.

History

The institution began on February 24, 1998: the non-state educational institution of higher professional education “Omsk Law Institute” on February 24, 1998 was created by the Fund for Social and Legal Protection of Graduates of the Omsk Higher School of Militia (on August 16, 2004 it was renamed the Foundation for the Promotion of Legal Education and Science ).

In accordance with the order of the Federal Service for Supervision in the Field of Education and Science of July 25, 2012, No. 941 “On State Accreditation of Educational Institutions and Organizations”, the non-state educational institution of higher professional education “Omsk Law Institute” gained the state accreditation status "academy". On September 6, 2012, the name of the latter was changed by the Foundation for Promoting Legal Education and Science to private educational institution of higher professional education "Omsk Law Academy".

The academy is located in the center of the city in a building that has a long history closely connected with the history of the Siberian Cossacks. It was built in 1857 for the Military Economic Board of the Siberian Linear Cossack Army. At that time it was the first three-story building in Omsk.

The main governing body of the Academy is the administration. Rector - Doctor of Law, Professor, Honored Lawyer of the Russian Federation Yuri Petrovich Solovey, widely known to the legal community for his work on administrative and police law.

World connections

Omsk Law Academy has international connections with University of Texas at Arlington and Drake University.

Extracurricular activities

A traditional event at OmUA is Maevka, a May Day open air meeting of students and instructors.

Academic life

Omsk Law Academy hosts an annual national conference of law students, "Rule of law in building civil society in Russia”. The proceedings of the conference are published in a collected volume.

Sports

OmUA has athletic classes of wrestling, volleyball and hockey. The hockey team takes part in Omsk amateur hockey league competitions.

Building

The building of the Omsk Law Academy was built in 1857 for the Siberian Cossacks. In 1891, in this building, Russian Emperor Nicholas II had a meeting with negotiators of the Siberian and Semirechye Cossacks. In the period from 1925 to 1999 in this building there were: department of Tomsk Infantry Course (1925-1926), Omsk Military Infantry School (1926-1946), Omsk Higher Combined Arms Command School named after Frunze (1946-1999). Since 1999, Omsk Law Institute has been located in this building.

Law clinic

In September 2003 the Omsk Law Academy established a Legal Clinic. It serves people who cannot afford expensive lawyers. The students provide legal support for the population while improving their own legal skills.
