Lt. General Om Prakash, is a retired Indian Army officer. He became commander of the XV Corps in 2012.

Early life and Education

Om Prakash Chhillar was born on 10 April 1955 to Smt Kasturi Devi and Ch Roopchand. His family is based in Bahrai village of Jhajjar district in north Indian state of Haryana.[3][5][6][7]

Singh completed his primary education in his native village and then moved to Sainik School, Bijapur, Karnataka for his secondary education in 1967 before joining the National Defence Academy in 1972. He holds Master of Science Degree in Defence Studies and Master of Philosophy Degree in Defence Studies and Strategic Studies.

The General Officer has also attended United Nations Peace Support Mission Planning Course, at Nairobi, Kenya, International Humanitarian Law Course at International Institute of Humanitarian Law San Remo, Italy, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and National Defence College, New Delhi.

Military career

A thoroughbred military professional with exceptional expertise in strategic, operational, logistics and security planning, wide spectrum Human Resource management , budgetary control, disaster management, infrastructure development and civic action programs. Highly dynamic and result oriented with flair for developing and implementing innovative practices. He has served extensively in Counter Terrorist & Counter Insurgency Operational areas in Jammu & Kashmir and North East India. He has even served with Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka and headed a United Nations Special Force in Iraq.

Has the rare honor to command the frontline combat units and formations in extremely challenging operational areas:

Commanded Corps (Chinar Corps), the most sensitive and operational Corps of Indian Army, deployed along the Line of Control and Counter Terrorist Operations in Kashmir Valley.

  • Carried effective counter terrorist operations, and brought in great degree of peace & stability in Kashmir valley
  • Carried out enormous Sadbhavna and infrastructure development projects
  • Enunciated several policies for rehabilitation & bringing youth in national main stream. For the Exceptional & Extraordinary service in security of the nation, was awarded the Uttam Yudh Sewa Medal by the President of India
  • Commanded Infantry Division (Ace of Spades Division) along the Line of Control and Counter Terrorist Operational area in Jammu and Kashmir

  • Ascendancy over the enemy along the Line of Control and carried out effective counter insurgency operations brought in great degree of peace & stability in Jammu region
  • Executed enormous Sadbhavna and infrastructure development projects for local populace. For the very high degree of professionalism and contribution to the security of the nation, was awarded the Ati Vishisht Sewa Medal by the President of India
  • Commanded Siachen Brigade, the Highest and Toughest Battlefield in the World.

  • Evolved innovative battle drills to minimise weather casualties of own troops. In several high risk missions led the troops from the front. For his very high degree of professionalism and contribution to the security of the nation, was bestowed with the gallantry award of Sena Medal by the President of India.
  • Commanded Battalion along Indo-Tibet border in highly sensitive area in Arunachal Pradesh.
