Asthana grew up in Kolkata and Hyderabad. She studied English Literature at Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), Delhi University. She was actively involved in amateur theatre and headed the dramatics society in her college. She did her post graduation in Social Communications Media from Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai.

Having joined film maker Ketan Mehta as an intern on Oh Darling Yeh Hai India, she was Chief Assistant director on Aar Ya Paar where she was also the voice of Kamal Sidhu.

She wrote and directed the primetime TV series Hip Hip Hurray on Zee Tv.

She moved on to direct the primetime drama miniseries Hubahu on Sony TV .

An action adventure miniseries Time Bomb 9/11 she co-directed with Ketan Mehta.

She then directed the TV miniseries Mahi Way on Sony TV produced by YRF Television.

Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge opened on 14 October 2011 .

Bewakoofiyaan was produced by Yashraj Films opened on 14 March 2014 to mixed reviews and an average box office.

She directed another miniseries Romil and Jugal on Alt Balaji.
