In the 2014 season, Nunawading finished in bottom place of the Victorian State League Division 2 South-East, amassing seven points in 22 games.

Midway through 2014, Nunawading City youth player, Jake Brimmer (then Joey's captain) was scouted by Liverpool FC, Liverpool scout Barry Hunter spotted him playing for the Victorian NTC (National Training Centre) squad at Moreland in July 2013. But it was at Nunawading City, a club at which Ange Postecoglou had helped set up the junior structure, where Brimmer had developed.

In late 2014, it was confirmed that Nunawading City would be joining the NPL Victoria competition, and would enter the NPL Victoria 2 division for 2015, essentially the second tier of football in Victoria. After 20 consecutive losses, City earned its first point in the NPL2 competition on 18 July 2015, in a 0–0 draw away from home against Whittlesea Ranges FC. The point would prove to be the only point Nunawading earned that season, finishing the season in bottom place with a −95 goal difference.

In May 2016, Nunawading City striker Emile Damey was selected in the squad for Liberia ahead of Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches. Nunawading City got their first win when it defeated Murray United FC 3–1 at Mahoneys Reserve on 22 May 2016.

With the 2 season exemption between 2014-16 from relegation from NPL to the State League's, Nunawading would look to play a style that was more dependent on individual development rather than results hence the great amount of losses. This style has come under high criticism as primarily playing out from the back has caused the side to lose the vast majority of games by high margins.

Club president Nek Dimitrakis told MFootball “We started an environment that focused on getting a lot of the ball and a program that emphasises touches...Our possession game, although some look at it from a philosophy point of view, it’s actually a problem solving exercise for young footballers."

At the start of their 2017 season, Nuna drew their first two games to the Eastern Lions & Goulburn Valley Suns, after narrowly being defeated by Dandenong Thunder, they won their first game of the season 5-2 over Richmond SC. Nuna defeated the Casey Comets 4-0 in the 2017 FFA Cup Victorian Preliminary rounds, Mitch Cooper scored a hat-trick.
