Biography

Of Armenian descent, Nubar Terziyan was born in March 1909 in Istanbul. He went to Bezazyan Ermeni Lisesi (Bezazyan Armenian Lyceum) in Bakirkoy. In 1940 he began his acting career and in 1949 had his first major role in an adaptation of Huseyin Rahmi Gurpinar's Efsuncu Baba. He acted in hundreds of films and several TV shows. He died at the age of 84 on January 14, 1994 and is buried at the Balikli cemetery in Istanbul.
Racism victim

In 1979, Terziyan put an advertisement in several newspapers to express his condolences for the death of Ayhan Isik, another Turkish movie star. The advertisement referred to Isik and Terziyan as son and uncle, both endearment terms for a youngster and an elder who aren't actually related. Soon afterward, the family of Isik, terrified and infuriated by the slightest possibility that someone could seriously think that Isik had a family relation with an Armenian, gave a counter-advertisement to the press, meant as a public announcement, stating there is no connection whatsoever between Terziyan and Isik. The deep sentiment originally expressed was forgotten, and replaced with a public display of racism.
Popular culture

Nubar Terziyan was mentioned in a song by famed Turkish singer Sezen Aksu called "Kirik Vals" (Broken Waltz) in her Deniz Yildizi (Starfish) album.
