Records and career milestones

In January 2008, Djokovic won his first grand slam singles title by defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the Australian Open in four sets. Djokovic began the 2011 season by compiling a 43–match winning streak, which included tournament victories at the Australian Open, BNP Paribas Open, Sony Ericsson Open, Mutua Madrid Open and Internazionali BNL d'Italia. After suffering his first loss of the year to Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the 2011 French Open, Djokovic defeated twelfth seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach his first Wimbledon final and thus ensured that he would become the World No. 1 for the first time in his career. Djokovic went on to defeat Nadal for the fifth consecutive time this season to win his first Wimbledon title and his third grand slam singles title overall. At the US Open, Djokovic defeated Federer for the second successive year by rallying from two sets to love down and saving two match points at 5–3 down in the final set to win in five sets and thus reach his third US Open final. In the final, Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal in four sets to win his first US Open title and fourth grand slam singles title overall.

In January 2012, Djokovic won his third Australian Open title by defeating Nadal in the longest match in Australian Open history and longest final in Open Era Grand Slam history He defended his title the following year with a win over World No. 3 Andy Murray in the final. As a result, he broke the open era record for most consecutive Australian Open titles with three. In April 2013, Djokovic ended Nadal's 46 match winning streak at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters by defeating the Spaniard in the final in straight sets. With this achievement, Djokovic has now won all three ATP Masters 1000 events on clay and eight of the nine ATP Masters 1000 events overall.

In March 2015, he successfully defended his titles in Indian Wells and Miami, thus becoming the first player in history to accomplish the Indian Wells-Miami double on three separate occasions. A month later, he became the first man to win the first three masters tournaments of the season after triumphing in Monte Carlo. He finished the year with eight Masters 1000 finals appearances including a record sixth title of the season at the BNP Paribas Masters.
