The North Texas Mean Green women's basketball team represents the University of North Texas (UNT) in NCAA Division I college basketball, competing as a member of Conference USA. On April 9, 2015, Jalie Mitchell become the eighth head coach in Mean Green women's basketball program history. It is her first-career head coaching position and a dream job for the best player in school history. Mitchell boasts numerous records as a four-year letter winniner on the North Texas women's basketball team from 1999–02. She finished as the Mean Green's all-time leading scorer with 1,764 points and tops the list of career free throws made and attempted. In 2002, Mitchell was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year when she averaged 19.4 points per game. She earned all-conference honors all four years at North Texas and was a part of the winningest senior class in program history, compiling a 77–39 record – including a 42–4 mark at the Super Pit – and making back-to-back WNIT appearances in 2001 and 2002. The current coach is Jalie Mitchell, hired before the 2015–16 season.

From 2012 to April 2015, former Wake Forest women's basketball head coach Mike Petersen coached the team after stepping down from Wake Forest.

Since 1973, the team has played its home games in the The Super Pit.

Sophomore forward Eboniey Jeter, 21, of Killeen, Texas, was found dead in her room in Mozart Square Hall on the University of North Texas campus, of as yet unknown causes that are not thought to be suspicious, according to a university spokeswoman, on Tuesday, May 5, 2015. She had been an all-state performer at Harker Heights High School.

Season-by season record

Tina Slinker has the most wins as coach of the Mean Green, with 241 (along with 287 losses), in 19 seasons as coach. Of the 10 winning seasons in school history, she had coached six of them. The Mean Green played in the Southland Conference from 1983 to 1996, the Big West Conference from 1996 to 2000, the Sun Belt Conference from 2000 to 2013 before joining Conference USA in 2013.
