Professional background
He earlier had a short spell in the Indian Army and then joined the police force. He was Superintendent of Police in Kurnool district. For a long period, he was the Director-General of Fire Services before being elevated to the position of Home Secretary in 2004, succeeding Bharat Chandra. This was during the Chandrababu Government.
After a brief period, he became the Director-General of Police. Setting controversies aside, he spoke out to his police community that his selection was not based on any undue influence but on pure merit.
An expert in tackling Naxalism, he has been invited by other states who have taken police action against the group. A Christian, he has also been active in advocating for minority rights in India
