History

The school was started on August 7, 1961 with the blessings of late Mar Mathew Pothanamuzhi, first Bishop of Kothamangalam, the patronage of late Sri. K.M. George former Minister, Govt. of Kerala, and the stewardship of Rev. Fr. George Kunnamkot, former headmaster. It is a residential school with a separate boarding house for boys and girls.

Admission is open to all pupils without any distinction of caste or creed.

Basketball courts

Nirmala Higher Secondary School has two basketball courts with physical trainers providing training for the students.

Vidya Rangam Kala Sahitya Vedi

The aim of the club is to find out the talents of children in literature and arts and train them with workshops, screen play writing, film production, story writing, drawing etc.

Nature Club

The club provides the students with visit to forests and other natural beauty spots to acquire knowledge directly from there.

NCC

National Cadet Corps is a tri-services organisation comprising the Army, Navy and Air Force, engaged in grooming the youth – ‘The Leaders of Tomorrow’ – into disciplined and patriotic citizens. The genesis of the NCC can be traced back to the First World War when the Britishers created the University Corps as the second line of defense and to have a large pool of trained youth available for employment into the Armed Forces.

After independence the present day NCC under the Ministry of Defence came into existence on 16 Apr 1948 through NCC act XXXI, 1948. NCC was formally inaugurated on 15 Jul 1948.

In 1973 NCC is starting functioning in the school under 18(k)bn battalion. Parade training is twice in a week. The NCC cadets attend one 10-day camp, and a trekking camp and planting trees to teach them to protect nature. More than 100 students are eligible to get “C” certificates in each year.

Road Safety Club

Road Safety Club aims to reduce the harm (deaths, injuries, and property damage) resulting from motor vehicle collisions. The club conducts traffic awareness programs, propagates civic sense and the importance of road safety, and conveys the message that speeding and reckless driving is an antisocial behavior. Students organise programs to promote road safety and educate the public with dramas, skits, musical events and posters). Students control traffic in the morning and evening each school days

Scouts And Guides

The mission of Scouting is to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society. Scout and Guide units are separate although they have some coeducational activities such as Jamborees, rallies, and conferences. Handicapped boys and girls also participate in the Scouting program.

The Scout emblem incorporates a wheel with twenty-four spokes, known as the Ashoka Chakra, taken from the Ashoka pillar at Sarnath, in the green-and-saffron colors of the flag of India.

Scouting was founded in India in 1909 as an overseas branch of the Scout Association and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1938. Guiding in India started in 1911 and was among st the founder members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1928, also covering present-day Bangladesh and Pakistan at that time. The BSG serves 2,423,686 Scouts (as of 2010) and 1,286,161 Guides (as of 2005)

Scouts and Guides started in the school in 1988 under the leadership of Fr. Joseph Puthenkulam. A child of 10 years can become the member of it and can continue up to 10th std.There are chances for the members to attain badges.

Those who attain Rajyapuraskar got 30 marks as grace mark in SSLC examination. Those who attain Rashtrapathi got 60 marks as grace mark in SSLC examination.128 total members are in scouts and guides in the school.

The children participate in district camps and unit camps.

Dramatic Club

Each year the school conducts a drama workshop and allow the students to perform a play on the stage.

Pupils are taught to:

  • use dramatic conventions to explore ideas, issues, texts and meanings;
  • use ways to convey action, character, atmosphere and tension in scripting and performing plays, e.g. through dialogue, movement, pace;
  • appreciate how the structure and organization of scenes and plays contribute to dramatic effect;
  • evaluate critically the intentions and performance of dramas in which they have participated or have watched.
  • Roller Skating Club

    Roller skating is traveling on smooth terrain with roller skates. It is a form of recreation as well as a sport, and can also be a form of transportation.

    In the school more than 200 students take advantage of roller skating each academic year and participate in national level competitions

    Yoga

    The term yoga comes from a Sanskrit word which means yoke or union. Yoga is a method joining the self with the Divine, Universal Spirit, or Cosmic Consciousness. Physical and mental exercises help achieve this goal, also called self-transcendence or enlightenment. On the physical level, yoga postures, called asanas, tone, strengthen, and align the body. The postures make the spine supple and healthy and to promote blood flow to all the organs. On the mental level, yoga uses breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation (dyana) to quiet, clarify, and discipline the mind.
