The Nintendo Channel, known as the Everybody's Nintendo Channel (みんなのニンテンドーチャンネル Minna no Nintendō Channeru) in Japan, is an unsupported online service through the use of WiiConnect24 on the Wii by Nintendo. The channel offered viewing of videos from Nintendo, support for reading through game articles and also an online-based DS Download Station for the Nintendo DS to play demo versions of various Nintendo DS games. Users could send recommendations to Nintendo about a Wii or Nintendo DS game that they played, although Nintendo DS game cards had to be in the system's Slot-1 and locally connected to the Wii via Download Play in order to be eligible in the survey.
Contents
The Nintendo Channel debuted in 2007 in all regions, and an update was released at a later point which changed the user interface and various other things.
A North American-exclusive show called Nintendo Week, based on shows like Washington Week, was distributed via Nintendo Channel.
Nintendo ended support for the Nintendo Channel on June 28, 2013 along with 4 more Wii channels as WiiConnect24, which the channel required, was permanently disconnected. Most of Nintendo Channel's functions were succeeded by the Nintendo eShop.
Features
When users first start up the Nintendo Channel, there will be the option to configure settings for the channel which can be changed later in the main menu:
Every time when users start up the Nintendo Channel, a Digest Video will play (users will automatically be taken to the video list after startup in the updated version). When the digest video finishes or if users press the 'To the Video List' button below, the video list will appear.
Video List
There are 9 pages with 5 videos each (10 pages with 6 videos each in the updated version), a button back to the Wii Menu, a settings button, and a Find Titles for You button (this name was later re-used in the updated version). When a video is selected, the video will start automatically (The video will start after the A button is pressed in the updated version). When the video finishes, you will taken back to the video list. During the video, a 'More Information' button is available for users to view more details about the software.
Software Details
When 'More Information' is selected during the video or in the video list, users can view details about the upcoming title for Wii, WiiWare, or Nintendo DS. Users will have the choice to add the title to favorites (in the updated version), download the WiiWare title directly from the Wii Shop Channel, and view the retail game's official site in the Internet Channel. When users scroll through the game's details, recommended videos are available for users to watch, and users can view the play-records for that software.
Find Titles for You
When users select the 'Find Titles for You' button (or select them individually below in the updated version), users have the choice to choose the following which include:
DS Download Service
The DS Download Service is a place for users to download demos or additional data to the Nintendo DS, DSi, DSi XL, or 3DS systems. Downloadable DS demo titles include:
The user will need a Nintendo DS system to communicate with the Wii. The user has to start up their Nintendo DS system, then select DS Download Play (On Nintendo 3DS systems, select Nintendo DS on the next screen). When the demo panel shows up, tap on it to download the software. When the download is complete, the user can continue to play the demo until the DS system is shut off.
Availability
The Nintendo Channel was available on the Wii Shop Channel for 0 Wii Points, which is free. The Nintendo Channel was available until services of the channel had been discontinued on June 28, 2013.
