Biography

Nigina Amonqulova was born in Panjakent, a city in Western Tajikistan. Initially aspiring to become a doctor, she later decided to undertake the career path of a singer after performing a song at a school-leaving party to much applause.

Amonqulova moved to Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, and began to perform traditional Tajik folk songs. At Dushanbe, she took part in a music festival and took home first place. Her style of singing, so unlike the pop music so prevalent in the country led to her being known all throughout the country. She revived various old folk songs, which had long been forgotton by the country, which led to them gaining even more popularity than they had beforehand. Notable qualities of her style include the tone of her voice, which is described as soft and loving, and the bright Tajik national costumes she wears.
