Nicos Tornaritis (born December 6, 1964) is a Cypriot politician and jurist. He is married to Leah Andrea Ellinas and has two daughters, Emily and Maria. He studied law and political science at the University of Athens, and has attended the Senior Managers in Government's JFK School of Government at Harvard University.

Parliamentary activities

He has been elected as an MP of Nicosia distinct with Democratic Rally elections on May 27, 2001, elections of May 21, 2006 and elections of 22 May 2011.

He was chairman of the House Education Committee from 2004 until 14 May 2013. Since then, he is the Parliamentary Representative of the parliamentary group of Democratic Rally and he is member of the Committees of the Interior, Institutions, Securities and Commissioner for Administration and Environment.

Political and social activities

He is the parliamentary representative of the political party of Democratic Rally. This position is major because hierarchically he is the third principal according to the leadership structure of the party especially in parliamentary issues and in a relationship with the party statutes. He is a member of the Executive Office of the Politburo and the Supreme Council, and Commissioner of Education and Coordinator Division of Culture and Sport. Among other things, led to the creation of a permanent contact between the Education Committee of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Cultural Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament.

Contributed substantially to establish the necessary consensus for adoption of law on the functioning of private universities (2007). He was Commissioner for the Environment and Sustainable Development DISY and Chairman of the Economic Management Committee.

Is vice president of the Institute of Byzantine Culture and board member of the Marine Life Foundation and Honorary Consul of Cyprus in Kenya.

With the election of the parliamentary mandate (2001) suspended the operation of the lawyer's office supporting the principle of incompatibility between the advisory capacity and the legal profession.

According to the rates of the Democratic Rally, the parliamentary elections held on 22 May 2011, which revealed that the first Democratic Rally party at rates in Cyprus, Mr Nicos Tornaritis reelected to the position of MP in Nicosia, in an extremely tough race in Cyprus is presented extremely high rates of absenteeism and claimed the seat in a province in which positions were seven candidates were twenty members. Mr. Nicos Tornaritis was enlisted in the fifth rank. With new reformation in the House of Representatives of Cyprus Mr Nicos Tornaritis patented his position as Chairman of the House Education Committee position he has held since 2004. In parallel, a member of the Committee on Environment and Human Rights Commission.

Writing work

Tornaritis published a study entitled "Maritime Cyprus". He also published articles and analysis in the press emphasis on education reform, the Cyprus problem in the contemporary European context, sustainable development and environmental protection, participatory democracy, the role of the younger generation and modernization of the state and its institution.

Awards

Hewas awarded the Medal of the City of Athens for his contribution in organizing the Conference of Southeast Europe and has received top honors of the Patriarchate of Alexandria for his contribution to the Orthodox Mission in Africa.
