Yarris was stopped by the police in 1982 in his native Pennsylvania whilst he was in a stolen car and under the influence of drugs. To try and get out of jail time, he named a former drug-addict friend (who he thought had died) as the suspect in the rape and murder of Linda May Craig. When that friend turned up alive and with no involvement in Craig's murder, Yarris became the number-one suspect.

Following a brief trial, Yarris was sentenced to death in 1982 and sent to Death Row. In 2003, DNA evidence proved that he had not committed the crime and in 2004, he was released.
