Born in Blackrock, Cashman was raised in a family steeped in the hurling tradition. His grandfather and granduncle, Mick Cashman and Jimmy Brohan, were contemporaries on the Cork three-in-a-row team of the 1950s, while his father, Jim Cashman, and uncle, Tom Cashman, enjoyed several All-Ireland successes. Cashman enjoyed some success at colleges level with St. Francis College Rochestown, while simultaneously enjoying championship successes at underage levels with the Blackrock club. He has since become a regular member of the Blackrock senior team.
