The regions wineries first appears in the 1950s, but the growth began after the 1970s and into the 1990s.

Geography

The region is bounded by Lake Ontario on the north, Niagara River on the east and the Welland River and the Niagara Escarpment, city of Hamilton, Ontario to the south and west.

Climate

The region's cool-climate appellation is influenced by the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario that results in day-night temperature range, substantial sunshine optimal for grape growing and intense flavour to the grapes.
