Newton MRT Station (NS21/DT11) is an underground Mass Rapid Transit interchange station on the North South Line and the Downtown Line in the planning area of Newton, Singapore. It is located along Scotts Road and is an underground station. It is the shallowest underground MRT station on the network at about 12 m (39 ft) underground, and is the only station on North South Line to serve as an interchange with the Downtown Line. It has an orange livery. The station is near landmarks such as the Newton Food Centre. This station used to be denoted by code N4 before the rail system map was revamped on August 2001.
Contents
There is no paid link between the North South Line station and the Downtown Line station due to insufficient space and clearance, meaning that commuters are required to tap out and then tap in again when transferring between the two lines. It is also due to the 24-hour link-way involved. However, there will be no extra charges as long as the transfer is made within 15 minutes.
Art in Transit
The Downtown Line section of the station feature the artwork "Newton" by MessyMsxi. The artwork draws inspiration from Singapore and Newton heritage, featuring the imagined landscape of Singapore in 2200. It envisions an alternative reality of how it may look as the country progresses, and to evolve and develop to newer heights.
