Career

Newton scored a number of club and chart hits in the 1990s. His first hit "Sky High", a cover of the 1975 hit by Jigsaw, was produced by Mike Stock and Matt Aitken in 1994. He experienced the most success with remakes, but also recorded numerous original songs, some of which he wrote or co-wrote.

Between 1996 and 1999 Newton recorded many cover versions, including Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch", Air Supply's "All Out of Love", Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me", Michael Bolton's "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You", Boz Scaggs' "We're All Alone", Tony Orlando and Dawn's "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)", "How Long?" originally by UK band Ace, Nik Kershaw's "Oxygen" and the Stock/Waterman track "Free To Love Again", originally recorded by Suzette Charles in 1993.

Newton also recorded numerous original songs, including self-penned tracks such as "Maybe", "Sweetest Secret", "Don't Worry" and "Angel In Your Eyes".

Newton's first two singles were both certified gold for sales in Australia—"Sky High" went to number eight on the Australian singles chart in April 1995, while his second single "Sometimes When We Touch" hit number five in Australia in December 1996. While the music video for "Sky High" was filmed in Israel, the videos for "Sometimes When We Touch", "Don't Worry" and "We're All Alone" were all filmed in Sydney.

"Sometimes When We Touch" also gave Newton his first UK Top 40 success.

Newton also had hits on the dance charts of many European and Asian territories. He toured South East Asia and had chart success in Thailand, and his songs were also popular radio hits in South Africa and Brazil.

Newton's singles were popular on radio in certain states of the United States. DMA magazine featured positive reviews of Newton's CD "Sweetest Secret" and subsequent CD singles.

In 2008, Newton went back into the studio to record songs for the album "Time to Believe", which was released in 2012.
