NewsShaft was an online radio platform and news website, covering Scottish politics and current affairs. The service consisted of five regular programmes including a weekly Scottish politics magazine podcast ‘NewsShaft’, produced and operated by News Scotland CIC, a Community Interest Company. The programmes were funded through contributions from listeners and readers. NewsShaft ceased broadcasting in October 2015, due to financial difficulties.

Background

NewsShaft launched on February 19, 2015 under News Scotland CIC by journalists Jack Foster, James Devoy and Carolyn Scott as a single podcast, which since expanded to incorporate a daily news website focused on Scottish politics. The weekly NewsShaft programme had an average of 9.3k listeners.

On top of its regular programming, NewsShaft broadcast a special one off live programme covering the results of the 2015 general election, spanning 9 hours.

In August 2015, NewsShaft expanded its service to 5 days a week with a specialist Scottish Parliament programme, regular documentaries and a live phone-in, but the service was ultimately forced to close later in 2015 citing financial difficulties.
