Magazine departments

There are four to five feature articles in each magazine. The length of these articles is around 1,000 words with four to six photos each. A feature article usually requires work from one to three photographers.

Many of the magazine’s articles fit into a specific "department." Each department focuses on a specific niche of Newport County’s lifestyle.

  • Antiques highlights a small piece of Newport's antiques.
  • Built To Last showcases how Newport County's older buildings have withstood the test of time.
  • Crave highlights items that can be purchased from local businesses and shops.
  • Datebook is in each issue of the magazine, and lists events and activities in the Newport County area.
  • Day Tripper talks about a day or weekend trip taken off Aquidneck Island. Includes directions and accommodations for this trip.
  • Fashion is a six to eight-page photography spread for fall and sometimes a three to four-page spring spread.
  • In Our Midst profiles a local person, couple or family with a unique history or something special to share.
  • Making Waves is around 800 words and the articles have a nautical theme.
  • On Nature's Side focuses on the environment. The articles are typically around 800 words including animals, trees and nature hikes.
  • Social Scene highlights non-profit events in Newport County with photographs and a brief description of the event.
  • Taste focuses on food, restaurants and dining. Articles sometimes look at behind the scenes work in local restaurants, such as Fluke Wine Bar. Newport Life writer Michael Persson wrote about his experience behind the scenes, "Unless the kitchen is an open one, the chefs have no way of judging the scene beyond their walls. And for an 80-seat restaurant, that, on a Friday or Saturday night, will send out about 600 plates of food, knowing what’s around the corner will prevent the couscous from hitting the fan."
  • Way it Was talks about an aspect of Newport and how it was in the past.
