New Zealand did not officially participate in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, USSR as the government of that time supported the US-led boycott. However, four New Zealand athletes competed as independents under the banner of the NZOCGA. Tay Wilson was the chef de mission.

  • Ian Ferguson (K-1 500 metres and K-1 1000 metres)
  • Alan Thompson (K-2 500 metres and K-2 1000 metres)
  • Geoff Walker (K-2 500 metres and K-2 1000 metres)
  • The three, plus Christopher Macdonald, had also originally entered the Men's K-4 1000 metres event, before withdrawing.
