Background

In March 2007 alternative group J*Davey signed to Warner Bros. Records and began recording their debut album to be released later that year. The group recorded many songs that would end up on their first EP, 4000 AD, and their first full-length release The Beauty in Distortion/The Land of the Lost. Warner Bros. was unsure how to market the group's material and sent the group to work with more established producers with mixed to negative results.

Frustrated with the label, J*Davey released The Beauty in Distortion/The Land of the Lost independently in 2008. The Independent album went on to be a critical success and earned the band new fans. Determined to help guide the group, the Warner Bros. A&R introduced the group to producer Greg Wells. Wells and the group formed good chemistry and created the album's first single, "MaMa's Back (End Of Your World)".

Despite the work with Greg Wells, the A&R still was not ready to release the material, so the group went back to their roots to attempt to create one final version of the album. Warner Bros. liked the material, but sent the group back one last time to create "radio ready" singles for the album. With the help of Greg Wells, the group created "Kill 4 Fun" and "Whatcha Lookin @". While the record company decided how to market the group, J*Davey released two mixtapes, Boudoir Synema: The Great Mistapes and Evil Christian Cop: The Great Mistapes, via their Bandcamp site.

By 2010, Warner Bros. had created a plan to release the album on the condition that lead singer Jack Davey (real name Briana Cartwright) went solo. Before any more was made of the decision, however, changes in the company fueled by the promotion of Kara DioGuardi as vice-president of A&R in 2008 allowed the group to ask for their release form Warner Bros. Upon their release they created their own musical imprint, illav8r, and began associating other artists to it. Illav8r became the imprint they would release New Designer Drug on.

Critical response

New Designer Drug garnered mostly favorable reviews from websites like Soul Bounce and The Couch Sessions, however due to the lack of major label backing, the album has yet to be rated on larger sites like Metacritic or Pitchfork.

Album Release

New Designer Drug was released digitally to the group's illav8r website on November 22, 2011. The album and liner notes are available for $2.99 as a digital download on their website. The band also provided a free steam of the album for those not interested in purchasing the album.
