Neustadt (Weinstraße) Hauptbahnhof is the railway station and centre of public transport in the city of Neustadt in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Contents
In addition to the Hauptbahnhof, there is another station in the city, Neustadt-Böbig, which is a stop on the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn. Neustadt Local station (Neustadt Lokalbahnhof) was the terminus of the metre gauge Neustadt–Speyer Local Railway (Lokalbahn Neustadt–Speyer), but was closed with the line in 1956.
History
The Rheinschanze–Neustadt section of the Palatine Ludwig Railway was opened on 11 June 1847. Some years later, when the Palatine Maximilian Railway to Wissembourg and the Palatine Northern Railway to Monsheim were opened, the trackwork had to be increased considerably, whereupon the station building had to be replaced. In 1909, the Cuckoo Railway opened from Lambrecht to Elmstein, to the west of Neustadt; its service mostly began or ended in Neustadt.
From 1911, an overland tramway (interurban), the so-called Palatine Overland Railway (Pfälzer Oberlandbahn) also operated from the station forecourt, to Landau until it was closed in stages from 1953 to 1955. Around the same time the Palatine Ludwig Railway was electrified through the station.
Operations
In 2003, the station was modernised with the introduction of the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn and the platforms were raised. Since then, lines S1 (Homburg–Osterburken) and S2 (Kaiserslautern–Mosbach) have stopped at Neustadt station.
