Neel Doshi is a first time author, second time founder, and organizational culture enthusiast and expert. He and his wife, Lindsay McGregor, are the co-founders of a company building technology to help organizations of all sizes and across all sectors create high-performing cultures. Doshi and his co-founder authored Primed to Perform: How to Build the Highest Performing Cultures Through the Science of Total Motivation, a book about the surprisingly elegant science behind legendary cultures like those of Starbucks, Southwest and the Apple stores. Doshi was previously a partner at Mckinsey and Company, CTO and founding member of Genesant Technologies, and employee of several Fortune 500 companies.

Early life

Doshi was born and raised in Queens, New York, where he got an early start with math and science at Bronx High School of Science. He went on to study mechanical engineering at MIT, and then finance and marketing at The Wharton School, from where he received his MBA. He now lives in Manhattan, New York with his wife Lindsay McGregor.

Early on, Doshi's parents Bhanu Doshi (mother), who ran a small currency exchange business, and Jawahar Doshi (father), a metallurgical engineer, instilled in him the importance of math and science and set an example of the entrepreneurial spirit—his father started both a travel agency and a stock brokerage firm.

In college, Doshi worked at FAO Schwarz toy store in Boston, Massachusetts one summer. He drove remote control cars on the sidewalk in front of the store to get customers excited about coming in. Even at this early age, Doshi was already experimenting with how little adjustments to context could dramatically impact people’s behavior.

Career

In 1997, Doshi got his first real introduction to corporate culture when he joined Citigroup. He worked in an internal technology incubator where he was a digital project manager.

After Citigroup, Doshi helped to start up Genesant Technologies, Inc. (2001 - 2004) and served as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Information Officer (CIO). The still-operating company develops health and fitness technology. Doshi’s time at a nascent company was crucial in shaping his curiosity about the role workplace culture plays in people’s ability to create their best work.

Doshi returned to school to deepen his understanding of business dynamics at The Wharton School. During one of his summers, he collected more corporate culture data points while interning with the investor relations group at American Express.

He subsequently joined McKinsey and Company (2004 -2014). There, he developed strategies for large organizations. He was elected a partner in 2011 and left the firm at the end of 2014 to start Vega Factor.

Notable Achievements

While working at Genesant Technologies (2001 -2004), Doshi's design of the GymAmerica.com website received a Forbes magazine best-of-the-web award. GymAmerica.com held the best-of-the-web award for nine consecutive years.

Philosophy

Doshi is an engineer at the core and approaches problems with those lens. He set out to solve the increasingly prevalent problem of disengaged employees, toxic organizations and a consequently stagnating economy. To Doshi, organizations are the most complex machines because of their very complicated human parts. A cog isn't going to walk away from uninspiring work but Tom from marketing surely will.

He believes that how we organize humans to not only avoid that outcome but also to create their best work is the most fascinating problem.

Building on decades of academic research, supplemented by their proprietary data, Doshi and McGregor articulate a new approach that debunks the notion that personal fulfillment and business performance are naturally opposed. Their solution is rooted in the fact that why we work determines how well we work. There are six fundamental reasons people work (or do anything for that matter). Play, purpose, and potential strengthen performance. Emotional pressure, economic pressure, and inertia weaken it. When a culture maximizes the first three and minimizes the latter three, it achieves the highest levels of a phenomenon called total motivation (ToMo). This leads to the highest levels of adaptive performance.

Doshi has helped various global organizations on topics of culture throughout his professional career. His work has taken him to many countries including India, Japan, Vietnam, South America, Peru, Chile, México, Canada, Europe, England, France , Italy, Greece, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Israel and South Korea.

Outside Interests

In his spare time, Doshi is an avid woodworker and photographer. On weekends, he does art projects such as design culture playing cards and ecosystem maps.
