The National Mental Health Commission (NMHC) is an Australian government executive agency established in 2012 to provide independent reports to community and government on mental health services and outcomes. Partnership with the Mental Health Commission of Canada

In March 2013, the NMHC announced a partnership with the Mental Health Commission of Canada. The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding and agreed to share knowledge on best practices for mental health research.

National Seclusion and Restraint Project

In August 2013 the NMHC commissioned researchers from the University of Melbourne to conduct a national review of the ways that seclusion and restraint is used in mental health care services in Australia and identify ways to reduce or eliminate the practice. The project is led by Prof Bernadette McSherry of the Melbourne Social Equity Institute. Following a national survey conducted in May 2014 a final report will be presented to the commission in August 2014.
