National Container Company (NCC, Russian: Национальная контейнерная компания) is the container port operator of Russia. It ranks among the world’s top 20 container operators.

NCC focuses on the development of container terminals at the Baltic as it is the key region for Russian container traffic bound to more than a half of Russian population and major industrial areas. Black sea ports of Ukraine are also of NCC's interest.

The terminal throughput capacity under the company’s control equaled 2.8 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2012.

History

The National Container Company was established in 2002 as an operator of the network of container terminals. The first terminal to be a part of the company was the First Container Terminal (FCT) at St. Petersburg’s seaport.

In 2003 NCC signed a contract with Eurogate (a European container terminal operator) with the intention of creating a container terminal in Ust-Luga. The construction of the terminal started in 2007.

In 2009 the off-dock container terminal and the logistics complex (being under construction since 2007) based in Shushary (Logistika-Terminal) started functioning. At the Logistics Terminal in 2011 they employed for the first time in CIS the ‘dry port’ technology allowing free movement of containers between the sea terminal and off-dock facility.

In December 2011 the Ust-Luga container terminal started up; the first ship to enter the port was that of the Unifeeder company.

In 2012 NCC’s freight turnover equalled 1.38 million TEUs.

Structure and management

First Quantum Group and Andrey Kobzar, a Russian entrepreneur, are the company’s owners in equal shares. 20% of Ust-Luga Container Terminal (JSC) is controlled by Eurogate (German Seaport Operator).

NCC holds the following assets:

  • The First Container Terminal (FCT), which is based in St. Petersburg, with the throughput capacity of 1.35 million TEUs a year.
  • Ust-Luga Container Terminal (ULCT) is situated at Ust-Luga seaport, in the southern part of the Gulf of Finland (Leningrad Oblast, Kingisepp Region) 120 km away from St. Petersburg and 57 km away from the Estonian border. Maximum throughput capacity equals 3 million TEUs.
  • Logistika-Terminal (LT) is Shushary-based ground terminal and logistics complex (St. Petersburg) with the throughput capacity of 200,000 TEUs a year.
  • BaltContainer is a truck operator enterprise.
