Nandini Mukherjee is a Communist/ Marxist political candidate and a professor in the department of computer science and engineering at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, India. She has a PhD from the University of Manchester, UK, and has done research in the fields of Parallel Computing, Grid Computing and Wireless Sensor Networks. Dr. Nandini Mukherjee is the Left Front nominated CPI(M) candidate from the South Kolkata Lok Sabha constituency in the 2014 Parliamentary Elections in India. She was involved with the Students' Federation of India in her college days. Later on she was associated with the movement for self-reliance in Science and Technology through the Forum of Scientists, Engineers and Technologists (FOSET) and the Vigyan Mancha.

Mukhopadhyay is the Secretary of the West Bengal Free Software Mancha (FSMWB). She is also active in the All India Democratic Women's Association(AIDWA), and is a state Secretariat Member of the All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO). In 2011 she contested the by-elections from Bhawanipore Assembly constituency.

Education

Nandini gave her Madhyamik examination from Kamala Girls' High School. She studied for her Higher Secondary examinations from Patha Bhavan School. She has an excellent academic record. She did her Bachelor of Engineering Degree from the Department of Computer Science and Technology of Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur in 1987. (The college later became known as Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur, and recently became Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST). She did her Master of Engineering Degree from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Jadavpur University, in 1991.

In 1996 she was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship to do her PhD from the University of Manchester in the UK. After 3 years of research she was bestowed the degree in 1999.

Teaching

Professor Mukherjee has been teaching in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at Jadavpur University since 1992. She is also presently the Director of the School of Mobile Computing of the University. Four students have been awarded PhD degrees under her guidance and 8 students are currently pursuing their PhD with her supervision.

Research

Dr. Mukherjee's PhD work from Manchester University was in Parallel Computing. In 2001 she went to Newcastle University, UK, for six months, to pursue further research in high performance computing. Her focus areas are Parallel Computing, Wireless Sensor Networks and Grid computing. She has published over 80 research papers in the International Journals and Conference proceedings. She has visited France, Germany, Sweden, Italy,Greece, USA and Taiwan to present papers in International Conferences, to give invited talks, and to collaborate with researchers in other countries.

She has supervised several research projects funded by different agencies of the Government of India. Professor Mukherjee is currently leading a collaborative research project to investigate the application of mobile computing and wireless sensor networks to the Indian rural health scenario.

Politics

Nandini was a leader of the Students' Federation of India in B.E.College. She was an active participant and organiser of the Group Theatre and Ganasangeet teams in college. She became associated with the Science and Technology movement for self-dependence through the Forum of Scientists, Engineers and Technologists (FOSET) and Vigyan Mancha. She is now the State Secretary of the Free Software Mancha of West Bengal.

Nandini Mukherjee is the Joint Secretary of the Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA), an active member of the West Bengal College and University Teachers' Association (WBCUTA). She has previously been elected representative of the teachers in the Executive Council of Jadavpur University.

Nandini is also actively involved in the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA). She is a State Secretariat member of the All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO). Nandini Mukherjee was the Left Front nominated CPI(M)candidate in the Bhawanipore by-elections in 2011. She is contesting the Lok Sabha election of 2014 from the South Kolkata Constituency as the Left Front Nominated CPI(M) candidate.
