Integrated services

The facility now incorporates a community hospital and primary care centre which are run by general practitioners, providing a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services.

The primary care centre has 22 consultation and treatment rooms, including a dedicated Minor Surgery Suite and Ultrasound room.

The 19 community hospital beds are used for the care of patients who require more intensive medical input than can be provided in their own home, but who do not require to be admitted to the District General Hospital located in Inverness.

The Nuffield Trust and King’s Fund observed that this facility has a configuration that allows it to operate as an integrated primary, community and social care services centre within which the merged GP partnership is based.

Alex Neil, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing visited the facility in June 2014 to see the benefits arising from having these integrated health and social care arrangements available to patients.

History

The original stone buildings were completed in 1906. Designed by William Mackintosh of Inverness, the original Town and County hospital building had taken two years to construct.

The £12 million development that began in 2008 was planned to create a complex of connected healthcare facilities, but this significant expansion of the Town and County Hospital buildings needed to be done in several phases.

Phase one included the construction of a new block that would house the inpatient wards, day hospital, outpatients department, A&E suites, occupational therapy and physiotherapy facilities, hospital kitchen and ambulance station. These areas opened for use in 2009.

Phase two provided the new GP centre facilities along with the main hospital reception and waiting areas. Accommodation for health visitors, district nurses, and social services was also included in this phase.

Phase three involved renovating and converting the original listed Edwardian building to allow it to become a dental facility, complete with its own reception. This project was intended to be able to accommodate 5 dental surgeries.

The centre was officially opened in September 2012 by the Chief Executive of NHS Scotland, Dr Kevin Woods.
