Season 1

Shivanya is a shape-shifting serpent who wants to avenge for her parents' death with the help of her friend and cousin, Shesha. There were five murderers, but Shivanya was able to see only three of them: Ankush, Viren and Shailesh. They killed Shivanya's parents to attain the Naagmani, a gem but they failed in doing so. As part of her revenge, Shivanya enters into Ankush's house as a maiden, and his son Ritik, a kind-hearted and joyful young man, subsequently falls in love with her. Upon finding out about Ritik's feelings for her, Shivanya marries him for her revenge and later kills Viren, the first murderer.

Realizing serpants are after their lives, Ankush's family and friends seek the help of Guru Maa who provides them with rings that protect them from serpants. Afterwards, Shivanya and Shesha kill Ankush's friend, Suri when Shivanya learns from Shesha that he is the fourth murderer.But Shivanya is nevertheless able to kill Shailesh, the third murderer.

However, Shivanya soon begins realising that Ritik is really a good person and is unaware of his father's evil doings and Shivanya eventually falls in love with him, much to Sesha's disappointment who thinks Shivanya won't be able to kill Ankush because of her love for his son Ritik.

Soon, Shesha and Shivanya face new enemies, including Kabir, the shape-shifting mongoose and Mayuri the shape-shifting peahen but they are eventually killed by the two serpants. Then it is revealed that Ankush's wife, Yamini is the fifth murderer and that Ritik is her fraternal nephew. They had actually kidnapped Ritik's real father as only he and Ritik could touch the Naagmani because of a sign on their bodies.

Shesha begins falling for Ritik as well because of his loving and caring nature but she controls herself. Upon learning about Sesha's feelings for Ritik, Yamini, who found out that Shivanya and Shesha are shape-shifting serpants, tricks Shesha into betraying Shivanya and thus, Shesha becomes Shivanya's enemy because of her obsession for Rithik and the Naagmani. Shivanya manages to kill Ankush but Ritik witnesses his father's murder and finds out that Shivanya is a serpant and begins hating her, although his heart still deeply loves her.

Later on Queen Avantika, who is shape-shifting bees want to attain the Naagmani. Ritik soon learns the truth about Yamini being evil and joins with Shivanya to protect the Naagmani from Avantika. Shivanya and Ritik consummate their marriage, leading to Shivanya losing her powers. However, she and Ritik succeed into saving the Naagmani and exiling Shesha, Yamini and Avantika. Shivanya eventually gets pregnant and she and Ritik get a boon to stay together.

Season 2

Three months later, Shivanya and Ritik are seen running from unknown enemies. Shivanya slips and Ritik takes her to hospital where she gives birth to a healthy baby girl, Shivangi, despite being six months early.

Almost 25 years later, a widowed Shivanya doesn't want Shivangi to become an Ichchadari Naagin(Shape shifting female snake). Hence, she seeks the advice of a Guruji, who tells her to get Shivangi married before the age of 25. Rocky Nikhunj, Ruchika's (Shesha) fiancé and Yamini's great nephew, falls for Shivangi. Unaware of Rocky's relation to Yamini, Shivanya arranges for his marriage to her daughter. Meanwhile, Ruchika releases the Mahishmati Kingdom again, resulting in the return of Queen Avantika who had resurrected Yamini 25 years ago, in the hopes that she'd be useful in obtaining the Naagmani.

On the day of the wedding, Yamini's gang kill Shivangi's family and fatally stab Shivanya. Already dying, Shivanya disguises herself as Shivangi (wearing bride dress) and dies at the hands of Ruchika. Yamini informs Rocky about the deaths, blaming it on dacoits. Rocky is heartbroken.

Guruji informs Shivangi, who escaped, about Shivanya’s past life and tells her that her father Ritik was son of King Sangram Singh of Suryavanshi Singh Royal family who are protectors of Naagmani and she only can touch and pick Naagmani. Shivangi had seen the murderers of Shivanya in her eyes, including someone she believes to be Rocky, and swears to take revenge. Ruchika and Avantika try to touch the Naagmani but fail. Shivangi leaves cousin Gautami to keep her safe, after a nightmare, and attempts to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff. To her shock, she is still alive after the fall and has become a Naagin. Shesh Naag reveals to Shivangi that she has to avenge her mother's death and also protect the Naagmani. Shivangi is 25 now and Guruji tells her to recite three words (Rudra, Shesh, Shivanya) to transform.

Less than a week later, it's Rocky and Ruchika's wedding day. Shivangi comes to Rocky's house to take revenge, playing along with the dacoit story. Yamini is shocked to see Shivangi but accepts her as she is the only person who can touch the Naagmani. Yamini replaces the bride and Shivangi marries Rocky. Although angry at first, Ruchika accepts the marriage for the Naagmani.

Shivangi seduces murderer Amar, Rocky's uncle, as Ruchika and kills him in a temple. Rudra, an Icchadhari Naag(Shape shifting male snake), witnesses this and joins hands with Shivangi. He wants revenge from the Nikhanj family because they used their influential powers to cover up a hit and run committed by Amar which killed Rudra's wife.Shesha, Yamini, Manav, Vikram, Avantika doubt that Shivangi is maybe an Icchadhari Naagin. They made various plans to identify Shivangi's truth but Rudra always fails their plan. Rudra enters Nikhanj house pretending to be relative of Suryavanshi Singh family in front of Yamini.

Shivangi and Rudra then tries to kill Avantika but fails so she kills Avantika's husband, Vikram. Now all but Ruchika and Avantika wear special necklaces which harm Naags on contact. Rocky wears the deceased Vikram's one without knowing what it is, leading Shivangi to believe he really is the 8th murderer. Still in love with Rocky, despite everything, Shivangi somehow gets rid of his necklace so he can touch her again without hurting her.Shesha, Yamini, Kapalika, Avantika come to Know that Rudra is an Icchadhari Naag and another Naag or Naagin is helping him.Rudra stops them from getting Naagmani.

Development

Naagin was developed by the Balaji Production's producer Ekta Kapoor who also holds the chair. Kapoor hired Santram Varma, Chandni and Niraj for the direction of series while Tanushree Gupta was selected to be the creative director. The story for the serial is written by R M Joshi, Neha Singh, Shivani Shah and Ankush Nagpal who also wrote the story lines. The dialogues were written by Rekha Modi.

In mid-2015, Balaji Telefilms began the casting and development, the series was finalised to be one of the different shows in Indian media and was also selected to function the storyline in limited sequence of episodes. The project was finalised in August and It was decided that the series will be aired twice a week with 40-minute episodes minus commercial, It was also thought that the show would compete against Ekta's Kumkum Bhagya, but in November, it was announced that the series will be given 20:00 slot which reserved both the series for TRP management.

Ratings

In late 2015, the series became the highest-viewed television series in India, leaving behind ZEE TV's soap opera Kumkum Bhagya and Star Plus's soap opera Saath Nibhaana Saathiya on second and third positions. It remained first in the ratings through the end of its first season. Naagin continued to top the TRP chart. In late 2016 Naagin 2 also occupied First place in TRP chart and continues to beat other shows .

International broadcast and dubbed versions

In Pakistan, the series was aired by Filmazia simultaneously with Colors TV, till October 2016. Naagin is dubbed into Malayalam as Nagakanyaka on Surya TV and in Telugu and Tamil as Naagini on Gemini TV and Sun TV respectively. It is dubbed in Sinhala as Prema Dadayma (Hunt for love) on Sirasa TV in Sri lanka. Naagin is retelecasting on Rishtey Channel currently. The series is also dubbed into Indonesian and aired by SCTV on weekdays. In July to September 2016, it was dubbed to Vietnamese with the title name is "Xà Nữ Báo Thù" and broadcast on VTV Cab 5 – Echannel.
