Myrtle cole


Myrtle Cole is an American elected official in San Diego, California. She is a member of the San Diego City Council representing City Council District 4, and effective January 2017 she is the president of the city council. She is the first African American woman elected to the city council. She was first elected to office in the 2013 special election to fill the seat vacated by Tony Young, and re-elected in 2014. She is a Democrat, although city council positions are officially nonpartisan per California state law.

She won re-election to a four-year term in the June 2014 primary election, drawing 57% of the primary votes. Her second term began in December 2014. In December 2016 she was chosen by the other members of the council to serve as council president. In that role she sets the council’s agenda and makes committee assignments and chairmanships.
