He was elected as MLC under MLA's Quota on 5 March 2017

Hanmanth Rao was elected as MLA of Medak in 2009. He had also been previously elected as an MLA in Ramayampet (abolished in 2008) in a by election. In 2014, he contested the Malkajgiri Lok Sabha seat as a Telangana Rashtra Samithi candidate and finished in second place.
