The Artist

Musk Ming was born in China, since 2005 the young Chinese artist has lived and worked in Berlin.

Pseudonym

The name "Musk Ming" is a pseudonym of the artist. Musk (in Chinese: 麝香; pinyin: Shè Xiāng) is a class of aromatic substances often used in perfumery as well as traditional Chinese medicine. "Ming", which denotes brightness or clarity in Chinese, is Musk Ming's birth name given by his grandmother as he was born on a sunny morning after a snowy, windy night.

Art Work

From his unique life background and studies, Musk Ming finds a way to combine the traditional Chinese art with the modern, western technique. His artwork reflects an international outlook and cross-cultural perspective The missing or hidden sexuality in classical Chinese art and the relatively open approach in the West are brought to the fore in Musk Ming's paintings, representing a kind of irony that highlights the marked differences in sexual values between the East and the West. Behind his nude paintings, the topics always focus on the relationship between human being, society and nature. Musk Ming used for example in his work the subversive Maoism illustration style in order to propagate the sexually "enlightened history of China". Musk Ming also explores a return to Taoism values as a tolerant alternative and his work visualize the longing for an open-minded China.

Censorship in OFA Beijing 2008

Musk Ming's painting of athletes, "Go West", was chosen to take part in the official art exhibition accompanying the Olympic Games in Beijing (Olympic Fine Arts 2008). But the artist was forced by the Chinese authorities to remove the painting from the show shortly before its opening.
