He was educated at Mount Albert Grammar School from 1944 to 1947, and was a member of the school's 1st XV rugby union team in 1946 and 1947, and rowing eight in the same two years.

At the 1950 British Empire Games he won the silver medal as part of the men's eight alongside crew members Donald Adam, Kerry Ashby, Bruce Culpan, Thomas Engel, Grahame Jarratt, Don Rowlands, Edwin Smith and Bill Tinnock. Four years later at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver he again won a silver medal, this time in the men's coxed four.

Competing for Auckland's West End Rowing Club, in crews with his brother Kerry, Ashby won New Zealand national championship titles in the men's eights in 1949, 1951, 1952, 1953 and 1963, the men's coxed four in 1953 and the men's double sculls in 1956.
