The district municipality forms the eastern part of Digby County. It is one of three municipal units in the county, the other two being the Town of Digby and the Municipality of the District of Clare.

In the 2016 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, the Municipality of the District of Digby recorded a population of 7,107 living in 3,264 of its 4,048 total private dwellings, a change of 2999520000000000000♠−4.8% from its 2011 population of 7,463. With a land area of 1,657.33 km2 (639.90 sq mi), it had a population density of 4.3/km2 (11.1/sq mi) in 2016.
