Muhammad Hasan Ashtiyani (~1832–~1901) was an Iranian Shia mujtahid, jurist and man of hadith. He played a role during the Tobacco protest against the Tobacco Régie.

biography

He was born around 1248 lunar Hijrah in Ashtiyan in Markazi Province in Iran. When he was three years old he lost his father. His Mother engaged for him a teacher. The teacher taught Muhammad hasamn preliminary levels like writing and reading Quran. While he was very eager to learn religious sciences he travelled to Boroujerd to participate in seminary of Boroujerd. That Time, seminary of Boroujerd was eminent among seminaries. He learned Arabic literature, jurisprudence and Principles by Mulla Asadollah Boroujerdi. At the same Time he could participate in the course of Sayyed Shafi Japalqi who taught the religious teachings of shia. After that, He traveled to Najaf and became one of the special pupils of Shaykh Ansari. Since that he was very young, he sited back of curtain namely not along with adults. Then he comeback to Tehran. He was pioneer in teaching of innovations and points of his Master namely shaykh Ansari. He try to develop the style of Ansari’s school among men of religious sciences.

Political and social activity

He was also active in social and political affairs. Ashtiyani considered of those person who had great role during the Tobacco Protest. Not only he didn’t accept the gifts and diamonds of Shah but also he defended of rights of victims and sanction of Tobacco. He strongly supported of Shirazi’s fatwa and the repudiation of the concession.

    He finally died in 1319 lunar when he was 71 years old. At first he died in Abdul Azim Hasani and then his corpse transferred to Najaf.
