Commitment to Education

MPS is known for using its extensive resources, including a Smartboard in every classroom, a small library and a Lego Wall, to teach students the Ontario School Curriculum. Students are engaged on technology, through extracurricular activities like sports and in lessons. Student Council organizes school dances and Spirit Days for student enjoyment. A focus on social responsibility has led to yearly community clean-ups on Earth Day.

Balanced Day Schedule

The school uses a 'Balanced Day Schedule' to structure its weekday activities.

8:50: Entry bell (an abrupt ringing noise, sustained for about three seconds), followed immediately by the first instructional block.

10:50: First nutrition break (all students stay at school). Students go outside for 20 minutes of play time and then come inside for 20 minutes of lunch.

11:30: Second instructional block.

1:10: Second nutrition break (Intermediate students leaving school for lunch must have written consent). Students go outside for 20 minutes of play time and then come inside for 20 minutes of lunch.

1:50: Third instructional block.

3:10: Dismissal.

The Leader in Me Program

Mt. Pleasant School has adopted the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People (by Sean Covey). They feel these habits can assist their students to develop as individuals, as well as strengthen the sense of community in their students.

Fire Drills and Lockdown Practices

The school holds emergency drills at regular intervals during the year with at least three fire drill practices in both the Fall and Spring terms as well as lockdown practices in both Fall and Spring. Children are instructed as to the emergency procedures from their classrooms and other instructional areas such as the library or gymnasium. Since children are required to exit the building immediately on the fire drill bell, it is advised by the school that children wear suitable footwear (shoes or slippers) at all times while in the school.

Volunteers

Volunteers are allowed at Mt. Pleasant School. They must wear lanyards denoting their position. Lanyards are available at the office in one size only. Volunteers provide an avenue for getting the Community involved in the school and offering additional support for programs. Volunteers are needed on a regular basis. A police check is needed to volunteer in any Grand Erie school. Ways one can volunteer are:

  • assisting in a classroom
  • becoming an All Star Reading Coach
  • accompanying class trips
  • fund raising
  • school lunches
  • School Council
  • Dress Code

Despite its misleading name, the Mt. Pleasant Public School Dress code does not require students to wear dresses. It merely states that students, staff and volunteers are required to wear proper attire that displays good taste and demonstrates respect for themselves and others. Highlights of the code include:

  • Hats (or head ware) must be removed when inside the school, unless for a specified activity (headbands used for keeping hair back are allowed). An exception to this rule is on Fridays, when conservative headwear is permitted.
  • Safe footwear must be worn at all times, both inside and outside. Inside shoes are required.
  • Clothing must be appropriate to a school setting.
  • Shirts must be at least waist length and overlap pants during all activities.
  • Shoulder straps on shirts must be at least three fingers wide.
  • Necklines, shorts and skirts should fit appropriately and reflect modesty.
  • Pajama tops, bottoms and night shirts are not acceptable clothing at schools.
  • Appropriate undergarments are necessary and must not be visible.
  • Clothing with inappropriate language/graphics or messages is unacceptable at all times (promoting drugs,
  • tobacco, alcohol or violence). Those caught violating the code are either sent home to change their attire, or forced to wear the bulky, outlandishly colored sweater which resides in the Grade Seven classroom.
