The high school was built in the mid-1950s, with the first graduating class in 1962. The original school building was shaped like an octagonal hogan; it burned down near the end of the 1978 school year. Later that year, the current school building was constructed. In 1991, the Student Activity Center, gymnasium and auditorium were constructed and added to the school. Monument Valley's volleyball team has won 37 state championships.
