Mockbul Ali, OBE (Bengali: মুকুবুল আলী; born 1980) is a British diplomat, and the former Islamic Issues Adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Early life

Ali is of Bangladeshi descent. He graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Career

Whilst studying at university, Ali was political editor of the Muslim magazine Student Re-Present and a member of the Union of Muslim Students (UMS).

Ali was a policy advisor to three former Foreign Secretaries. He was the Foreign Office's adviser on Muslim affairs and has played a vital role as Islamic issues adviser to the Foreign Secretary in Foreign and Commonwealth Office outreach to Muslims worldwide. He was also a member of the Foreign Office's Engaging with the Islamic World Group (EIWG) and the Head of Prevent, Counter Ideology at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

His most recent diplomatic posting was in Cairo during the Arab Spring, and more recently, he was the Chief of Staff to the British Prime Minister's Special Envoy to Libya.

In 2005, Ali was seconded to the Labour Party to work on the 2005 general election campaign.

In 2014, Ali received the Royal College of Defence Studies Award for Strategic Leadership, a leadership programme in international strategy, and is the only civilian to have been awarded it.

Awards and recognition

In 2010, Ali was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours. In 2009, he was listed as one of The 500 Most Influential Muslims by Georgetown University's The Prince Alwaleed Center for Muslim–Christian Understanding and Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre of Jordan.
