History
Mitacs was founded in 1999. The name originally stood for "The Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems"; use of this acronym was phased out as the organization's scope increased. In 2004, the Mitacs Accelerate program was launched, supporting 18 research internships between graduate students at Canadian universities and industry partners during its first year. Since then, Mitacs has supported up to 10,000 internships through its programs.
By 2020, Mitacs will support over 6,000 research projects annually through the Accelerate program.
Mitacs Programs
Mitacs operates four programs and two pilot programs including:
Mitacs Accelerate
Research internships for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with industry across all disciplines.
Mitacs Elevate
A two-year program providing postdoctoral fellows with professional and leadership development training, while leading a long-term research project with a partner organization.
Mitacs Globalink
Supports two-way research collaboration between Canada and international research partners. In 2016, the Globalink Research Internship program welcomed 565 students across Canada.
Mitacs Step
Skills training workshops for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Workshops cover project management, entrepreneurship, communication skills, and basics of the business environment.
Canadian Science Policy Fellowship
A pilot program that matches PhD-level researchers to government department agencies in support of evidence-based policy-making.
Mitacs Converge
A pilot program that connects Canadian Small-to-Medium-sized Enterprises with multinational companies through R&D projects in collaboration with Canadian universities.
Funding
Mitacs is jointly funded by the Government of Canada, along with provincial governments, academic partners and research partners.
