2001–2014: Femina Miss India and Miss Diva

India has been participating in the Miss Earth Pageant since its inception in the year 2001, from 2001 to 2013 India's representatives to Miss Earth were selected by Femina Miss India, a beauty pageant in India which was founded in 1964. Femina Miss India is organised by the Femina, a women's magazine published by Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd (also known as The Times Group).

In 2002, the third winner at Femina Miss India was changed from "Miss India Asia Pacific International" to Femina Miss India-Earth, to designate India's representation at the newly launched Miss Earth pageant and a finalist was sent to Miss International. From 2007 to 2009, three equal winners were selected going to Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss Earth. In 2010, I Am She - Miss Universe India acquired the rights to send India's representatives to Miss Universe and the first winner at Femina Miss India was designated to participate in Miss World and the second winner was given to Miss Earth and the third winner was sent to Miss International. Later, in 2013 The Times Group again acquired the rights to send India's representatives to Miss Universe and launched a new pageant for Miss Universe named Miss Diva and in 2014, Miss Earth India was given as the second title at Miss Diva pageant.

India started well in Miss Earth during its debut in 2001. Shamita Singha made history for India as she is the first representative from India to Miss Earth. She was able to finish as one of the top ten finalists.

India has become such a strong contender for Miss Earth. Jyoti Brahmin of West Bengal and Shriya Kishore of Maharashtra both became part of the semi-finals in Miss Earth 2004 and Miss Earth 2009, respectively. Interestingly, both years were won by Brazil. On the other hand, during 2006 and 2007, India almost win the pageant through Amruta Patki and Pooja Chitgopekar who both finished as Miss Earth - Air or as 1st Runner up.

And in 2010, India finally won the Miss Earth crown through Nicole Faria. Aside from winning the main title, Nicole was also able to get some special awards such as the Miss Talent, which is the first special award in the 10th Miss Earth pageant. She performed a graceful belly dance that combined Oriental and Middle Eastern style in an event that raised VND100 million, which was donated to the HCM City Red Cross, to support flood victims in the central region of Vietnam. As a Miss Earth winner, one of Nicole's highlights during her reign was she focused on her country's problem. She focused her reign in addressing Bangalore lakes problems which have rapidly disappeared in the past 30 years from about 270-300 lakes to about 80 lakes remained due to industrial development and have been heavily polluted by human and industrial waste.

In the year 2014, the sister beauty pageant of Femina Miss India named Miss Diva sent India's representative to Miss Earth. Miss Diva pageant was established in the year 2013 and it is also owned by The Times Group.

The last titleholder is Alankrita Sahai who won the title on October 14, 2014.
